Join the Mila "Baba Posse"

Mila needs your help! We have several great resume-building volunteer opportunities available for people—like us—who love making a difference by being actively involved in the arts. If you'd like to be a part of the "Baba Posse," we'd like to hear from you! We're currently looking for people with time and expertise in any of the following areas:

Booking

Booking Scout (8-10 hours/month): Work with presenters locally, regionally and nationally to secure opportunities for performances, teaching, collaborations, recording and touring. Research opportunities, contact targeted presenters/clients, and negotiate contracts. A highly creative and key position for someone who knows the music business and sees how Mila fits into the industry.

Marketing

Marketing Director (5-10 hours/month): Board level position. Attend monthly meetings and work with board to develop business plan, overall marketing and brand management strategy, and annual plan and budget. Recruit and train committee members to execute marketing plan, which includes digital and print support for Mila marketing, public relations, advertising and fundraising.

Webmaster (6-8 hours/month): Back end and front end programming to keep our website up to date, functional, brand consistent, and interesting! Monitor and report on web statistics, develop strategies to increase web traffic. A great challenge for a creative technology junkie!

Mila News Editor (8 hours/quarter): Help Mila stay in touch with its audience base through regular web-based and print updates. Establish schedule, design template, and work with copywriters to develop stories for updates quarterly and as needed.

Media Relations (4-6 hours/month): Build media relations strategy to tell Mila's story to the world! Develop targeted media lists, issue calendar announcements and press releases for Mila performances and CD releases. Look for special opportunities to promote Mila's new CD featuring worldwide feasting traditions. Monitor media to find connections that relate to what Mila is doing and pitch stories proactively.

Advertising/Promotion Coordinator (2-6 hours/month): Research and develop an advertising strategy. This is a great position for someone who likes working from the ground up and knows their way around advertising and promotion in the arts.

Print and Digital Designer (2-10 hours/month): Work with Mila brand to design and produce print and web-based communication, including concert promotions and programs, tickets, direct mail marketing for presenters, audience newsletters and e-send outs, fundraising solicitations, and Mila stationary and collateral. Coordinates design and printing, and maintains master copy of all printed materials.

Database Administrator (1-2 hours/month): Keep Mila's database up to date by adding new entries from performance attendance, contributions and sales records. This is a very important job for a detail-oriented person who doesn't have a lot of time, but can follow through regularly to keep the database clean and updated.

Music

Copyright Research (10 hours/month Jan-March; 3 hours/month April +): Research copyrights for songs selected for Mila's new CD and make recommendations on copyright compliance. Work with Mila to secure permissions to use musical arrangements and replicate recorded music as needed. After new CD material is secured, continue researching Mila's existing song archive.

Music Research and Transcription (10 hours/month Jan-March; 3 hours/month April +): Locate sheet music and background information for songs selected for Mila's new CD. Where no sheet music is available, transcribe from sound recordings to digitally produced sheet music, including dynamic notes, using musical knowledge/experience, and digital transcription technology, such as Finale, after new CD material is secured, continue research and digital transcription of Mila's existing song archive.

Music Translation and Song Summaries (10 hours per month Jan-Mar; 3 hours/month April+): When working from source recordings, use language expertise to transcribe lyrics in native language, and work with traditional speakers and artists to fully understand the cultural context, meaning and dynamic context for the song. Once song lyrics and meaning are verified in native language, translate to English and write brief song summaries for program notes. After new CD material is secured, continue work on Mila's existing song archive.

Music Administration (4 hours/month): Copy sheet music, burn CDs for practice and distribute to Mila members. Work with artistic directors to develop program content, set lists, formation charts and music books for performances.

Resource Development

Development Director (6-8 hours/month): Board level position. Work with board to develop overall business plan, development strategy and annual budget. Research and develop grant calendar for submission and reporting. Recruit, make assignments and oversee grant writers to ensure that grant writing and reporting is on target and on deadline.

Grant Writer, several positions open (8-12 hours/grant): Research and write grants to increase Mila's operational and project funding. Must be a good communicator and persuasive writer. Assignments will be made in advance so you can plan ahead. Strong commitment and follow through are essential.

Special Events Coordinator (4-6 hours/month): Work with a professional event planner to plan and produce a spring fundraising event and fall CD release party in 2007. This is a great creative job for someone who loves tying together design, venue, ambience, food, wine and promotion to produce high quality events that present a consistent and strong brand.

Individual Donations Coordinator (2-4 hours/month): Develop and implement plan for individual donations, including schedule, solicitation plan, report and analysis, and acknowledgement and follow-through for individual donations. Work with database administrator to coordinate and track information on donors.

Volunteer Coordinator (time varies by season): A key position for a well-connected person who can work with Mila board members and artists and find people with skills and experience to support overall Mila operations.

Stage Production

Technical Manager (2-6 hours/month): Work with singers and venues to assess sound, lighting and stage requirements and secure appropriate equipment and staffing to ensure a high quality production. Establish times for technical rehearsals, sound and lighting checks. Serve as onsite technical coordinator at performances.
